Walking across the yard. Driving your wife to the grocery store. Fixing something around the house. Getting a good night’s sleep. Stepping outside simply because you feel like it.

For Emilio, independence was never one big thing. It was hundreds of little things woven so seamlessly into everyday life that he probably never thought to call them independence at all.
Then, little by little, a rare condition began taking them away.
Before his diagnosis, Emilio was the guy who handled things. He maintained the yard and made repairs around the mobile home he shares with his wife. Because she doesn’t drive, he was also the family chauffeur, getting them to doctor’s appointments, grocery stores, family commitments, and everywhere else life required them to go.

It was an ordinary routine, perhaps, but one built on something extraordinary that’s easy to take for granted: the freedom to simply get up and go.
That changed when Emilio was diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome/Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (GBS/CIDP). This autoimmune neurological condition damages the nerves and can cause significant weakness, numbness, pain, and fatigue.
Suddenly, the body Emilio had always relied on became less reliable.

Walking and standing became difficult. Driving was no longer a given. Yard work and home repairs became too physically demanding, and even relatively small amounts of activity could empty Emilio’s tank, requiring significant time to recover.
His wife doesn’t drive, so when Emilio lost the ability to simply grab the keys and take them where they needed to go, their world got smaller together. The errands, appointments, repairs, and everyday responsibilities they had spent years managing between the two of them suddenly required phone calls, favors, and family members willing to step in.

For someone accustomed to being the one who took care of things, needing that kind of help can be its own loss.
So Emilio has kept working toward the things that once came without thought. He continues infusion treatments and physical therapy, slowly rebuilding strength in a body that now makes him earn every bit of it.
And these days, small wins can mean a lot.
That’s where Chive Charities comes in.

We’re providing Emilio with a foldable mobility scooter that can help expand his world again without asking his body to spend energy it simply doesn’t have. A bike pedal exerciser and Normatec 3 compression system will give him additional ways to support the work he’s already doing to regain strength, while a memory foam mattress can make rest more restorative when fatigue and pain catch up with him. A solar generator rounds out the grant with a little more support, safety, and security at home. All in all, the total impact is $5,786.
Individually, they’re a scooter, a mattress, an exercise pedal, and a handful of other tools.

But to Emilio, they have the potential to become a trip outside that doesn’t end in exhaustion. Another opportunity to work toward stronger legs. A better night’s sleep. More time beside his wife. One less favor to ask. One more thing he can do for himself.
Those are the kinds of victories that can look small until you’ve lived long enough without them.

GBS/CIDP changed Emilio’s life piece by piece, taking ordinary freedoms he once had no reason to notice. His road back may look much the same: not one giant leap toward the life he had before, but a collection of hard-earned moments that make the life he has now a little bigger.

When you donate to Chive Charities, you help make those moments possible — giving people like Emilio the tools to reclaim a little more freedom, a little more independence, and another piece of everyday life. Piece by piece, it adds up. DONATE HERE.
